We Own It, RMT and TSSA are joining forces to oppose ticket office closures

Cut their profits not our ticket offices

Rail workers are standing up for a railway that works for workers and passengers - not for the profits of private companies. The RMT and the TSSA are not just fighting to protect the pay and conditions of their members, the workers who make our railways tick every day. They are also fighting to make sure that our ticket offices stay open to help passengers have the smoothest journeys possible. And we are joining forces with them in that fight on Tuesday 23rd August.

It was revealed last month that the government has secret plans to close almost 1000 ticket offices across the country. 

As RMT General Secretary, Mick Lynch, has said: “The floodgates have now opened for the annihilation of ticket offices. Ticket office staff make sure our railways are safe, secure and accessible. Wholesale ticket office closures would be disastrous and leave our railway deserted. Disabled and elderly passengers will be particularly affected.”

Mick Carney, TSSA President and ticket office clerk for train operator Southeastern, said: “The move to close ticket offices is beyond short-sighted and typical of a Tory government who understands the cost of everything but the value of nothing.  

“The elderly, disabled, less tech-savvy and many tourists rely on well-trained ticket office staff to not only get the best deal, but in many cases, without them, it would not be possible for them to travel. For me, a ticket office clerk of 33 years, this dispute is about far more than a pay rise.” 

We could save a billion pounds every year from taking our railway into public ownership, yet instead of taking our trains into public ownership and reinvesting profits into cutting ticket prices and keeping ticket offices open, the government is protecting private companies and cutting facilities passengers depend on instead. 

We know that the public is not on board with the privatisation of our railway. Our brand new poll, conducted by Survation, with a huge sample size of 4300, shows that 67% of the public want our railway in public ownership compared to just 21% who want it to be left in private hands. Even Conservative voters support public ownership of our railway by a margin of 63% for to 25 against. 

We are coming together with the RMT and TSSA on Tuesday, 23rd August to fight the government’s plan to close our ticket offices - and you can get involved.

Here’s how you can get involved on Tuesday 23rd August:

  • Attend an action near you - protests are taking place at train stations across England on Tuesday 23rd August 2022. Below is the list of places and times of confirmed actions. (*If your town is listed, the action is taking place outside your local train station.)
  • If none of the actions listed below is near you - download and print out this poster, go to your local train station by yourself or with family and friends, take a selfie/picture of yourself carrying the poster in front of your local train station, and share your picture on social media. If you do not have a social media account, send your picture to info@weownit.org.uk so that we can share it for you. Please tell us where you took action in your email if you send us your picture.
  • If you live in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland - you can take action in solidarity with rail workers in England. Write out a message of support for rail workers in England and for keeping ticket offices in England open on a plain sheet of paper, take a picture with your message wherever you can (whether at home or at your local train/bus station) and share your message on social media. If you do not have a social media account, send your picture to info@weownit.org.uk so that we can share it for you. I don't have a mobile phone and already I am finding it hard to park my car, as often I find you can only pay with a mobile. What happens when ticket machines are not working? We get fined for non- payment. I have never bought or booked anyhting online, and do not do online banking. I use MONEY, and the less money you have, the more contol you need over it. Closing ticket offices will be a disaster for passengers, staff, employment opportunities, and for the type of country we want to inhabit.

My daughter recommended an on line ticket from Bath to Cambridge for £100 I went to Bath Spa ticket office where a lovely person spent ages getting me a really flexible return ticket for £52. As my half pension is only £83pw, I really appreciated this. We MUST preserve these public services. There are so many elderly and vulnerable people who need people to help them. Jobs mean £££ for their local economies.

My main conncern is not fare dodgers but the safety of passengers. With no-one around on stations in any official capacity, what happens when people are stressed?, parents with children and luggage, the possibility of someone getting a scarf or coat caught in a train or just some-one needing help and guidance, eg people wth physical or limited mobility, or any other ills that flesh is heir to!

As someone registered with significantly reduced sight (partially sighted = sight impaired), I always find that the use of the machines to be a problem, and ticket office staff to granting me the very service that I need. There are very many more people with difficulties who will also find that their options for travel would be greatly reduced. Those using cash only may have to end their use of the railways? I regard this government proposal to be both callous and comprehensively stupid!

I have always found the help of the ticket office staff to be essential for my peace of mind. Finding the correct route and changes and the cheapest and quickest route is a real help I could not manage without. Please keep the office .

I totally agree with Mark Jones. I have two children in there late 50's who are partially sighted and cannot use the ticket machines on the platform. The also find the ticket office staff very helpful with finding the best routes and times for them to travel., even putting the tickets in order for outward bound and returns in the right order. How can the Government and the Shareholders not consider people with disabilities a priority. South Eastern are one of the worst franchise. They should look after their staff and passengers and not line the pockets of the shareholders and owners.

Disabled people often rely upon ticket offices being open and staffing in stations to make independent travel possible. Also, the best advice on ticket purchases, in my experience, is often available from those staffing the offices, not on line.

Passengers should be able just to turn up at a station and buy a ticket there for a journey. It should not be necessary to plan it in advance. And one should be able to pay with cash if one chooses. Furthermore, the knowledgeable staff at stations often can provide valuable advice about the best ticket to buy or route to follow, etc. And it is good to have human beings at stations, available to help fellow human beings with any needs, whether slight or serious. They are skilled and fulfilling jobs that benefit everyone. Let's keep all of these ticket offices.

Privatisation was supposed to cut fares due to competition. It has not worked. Fares are so high that passenger numbers are dropping. A number of years ago the Swedish railway system was running at huge losses. What did the Swedish government due to cure this , not increase fares but slashed them. Passenger numbers went up and the losses incurred disappeared. Should our government learn from this?

I deplore the planned closure of ticket offices. So many people are already digitally excluded from society and ticket offices provide a much needed service. Computers fail/ Wi-Fi can be unreliable and we cannot afford to lose ticket offices for cost cutting measures. We have already lost personnel on trains and cannot afford more losses for passengers.

Nationwide, around 980 public-transport service ticket-offices are at risk.

This and different threats endanger vital local provision - depended on by and serving residential areas and real people, in regions, everywhere.

Such conditions will worsen personal-safety and much other human-wellbeing - as well as just plain essential function.

The consequences would devastate untold aspects of the entire common-good.

Especially set to suffer are the already challenged, elderly and those with special-needs.

Human-resources, employment and livelyhoods also face shrinkage.

Whilst cutbacks loom - the corporate sector and monopolies yearly profits exceed £500 million - and top-incomes can reach at least £1 million or more.

Grant Shapps MP Transport State Secretary and whoever else should be reminded of these issues - towards addressing them - and encouraging both Government and Public Transport Companies to openly admit all intentions - hopefully without ticket-offices & personnel "efficiency".

Corporate sector formal proposal tabling public-consultation is 3-week's long.

More than enough argument, case and grounds to defend, keep and sustain ticket-offices & personnel.

Meanwhile, awaiting feedback, further developments and eventual outcome, then ongoing legacy.

This is all about cost cutting by rail franchises instigated by Grant Shapps compliant RDG and Network Rail. Not about rail passenger experience, service/assistance and safety. Stations need to be safe places with helpful staff.

Tory government minister’s , RDG franchise manager’s and Network Rail staff never use the railways so they are no judges of what the travelling public need. Franchises have failed the travelling public the only course now is to renationalise and employ railway people to run for the public and reinvest profits to improve the railway. Have just spent two weeks travelling by train in EU UK is years behind EU network areas network electrification, quality ,investment and staffing.

It looks as though Cornwall will be without any ticket office staff, and as they are the only staff at these rural stations,I would not feel safe arriving back after dark to negotiate alone the car park at Bodmin Parkway, miles from any town. I don't have a smart phone either. Given there's rarely staff on trains to seek help from, having no staff in stations, make this NOT a service at all.

We need them to stay open ……not everyone can get On-line to buy tickets, part of the joy of travelling on the train is communicating with the people who work there and it’s real sense of calm knowing that someone is there if you need help, either just to answer a question or help to get on and off the train………some stations have a massive gap between the carriage and the platform (such as Canterbury Kent) if you have any problems physically there is is little hope of you getting off ….unless of course you manage to ask a passenger.

I live in Scotland, and support the RMT in their campaign to keep ticket offices open in England. The Railways should be nationalised, and kept as a service for the public. Apart from the widespread redundancies, it is a vital part of the service and must be retained. What happens in England, will eventually affect Scotland, Wales and N Ireland.

I live in Leeds and know well that Horsforth, Ilkley are well used commuter routes into Leeds for work. Closing these stations ticket sales willi increase road use. Not all of us have full internet access, All rosds throughout the country are already choked with morning commuter traffic. This will only add to the problem

Ticket office staff have a detailed knowledge of the network. They can help in ways that online websites can not. Call centres keep you waiting for hours, and then have no idea what they are talking about. If the ticket offices close, I'm much more likely to travel by coach or by air.

There is only ONE train from Little Wittering to Victoria at 8.15am. So-called "competition" is utterly bogus. We used Gloucester Station recently and the ticket machine wasn't working. We didn't have long before our train was due and we started to panic. Luckily, we were helped by the very efficient and friendly ticket office staff who issued the tickets. We had also left our two together rail card at home and they helped with this also. The human touch helped to calm us down and resolved our problems. I am so sick of everything being privatised. It doesn't provide a better service. It cuts everything to the bone, reduces jobs, makes services more expensive and does not look after the paying public. Profits before people yet again.

I get assistance when travelling. Because of delays on a train journey I arrived into Hull station at 11.15 at night instead of 10. There were no staff members around and no security or police. I felt very vulnerable in the station and at the taxi rank just outside. I am 76, female and have health problems. Lots of drunks around.

It seems that far from increasing sustainability; it seems that the trend is towards more people using their own cars instead of public transport. Public transport is only public transport if the people that need to use it can feel safe. and feel confident accessing it.

Keep our railways safe and accessible. do not close our ticket office.

The service that I have received from my local ticket office has been AMAZING! As an older passenger the help that I have received has been over and beyond as as someone who wants to travel but also has anxiety issues this has been invaluable to me. I would be devastated if this was to go.

Many elderly, disabled, and learning disabled may be unable to drive and unable to use internet to pre-book etc. I can pre-book but this does not enable me to check with ticket office attendant about any very RECENT delays ..not always evident on the online systems. Ticket office staff can guide regarding parking and certainly disability assistance. This is capitalistic greed and overt disability discrimination. Train operators seem instant on destroying their most dependant customer base. Be warned.. everyone ages..& who knows what illnesses or accidents befall us in the future!! I find B|uses uncomfortable and jerky. I loved travelling by train.. especially before privatisation!

Having no ticket office is leaving stations wide open for crime, vandalism, suicide and more. I’ve travel in Italy and seen stations with no ticket offices and they are very scary and it’s all very sad. People need that friendly face to make sure they are going in the right direction and with the right ticket. I’ve traveled on trains all my life and so many times the ticket office staff have saved my bacon. Just the other day my train was cancelled and I had no idea what to do. Yes I had a horrible mobile ticket that I hate as they give me anxiety in case my phone breaks, runs out of battery or I lose my phone. Also I’m actually thinking of giving up my phone as it’s too controlling and I think soon this will be a fashion where phones will be BINNED- so don’t be stupid thinking that’s the future because certainly isn’t especially with expensive electric people won’t charge there phones as much

This is appalling news. I live outside Nottingham City and have to travel into town to buy a ticket in advance as I prefer to trust the knowledgeable ticket office people than to fathom the on line process and probably get the wrong sort. I have just looked up the offices due for closure. It does not seem possible to catch a train to anywhere if this planned closure idea goes ahead. They might as well close evey station. I suppose that's the ultimate plan?

So what happens to older people, young mothers struggling with children and luggage, people who have accidents when boarding, people with learning difficulties who become confused and need help? Not everyone is able to afford a mobile phone/computer what about them? An out of touch Government that couldn't care less about the people it is there to serve

Even if most sales are on-line, we still need a ticket office to sort out problems with tickets.

Nationalisation would mean a single company running the railways which would save money and reduce duplication under the present franchises.

Navigating the complexities of train tickets online is a nightmare. I rely so much on our excellent ticket office for help, and so often find a route and a price much better than offered online. It's something called a service. A simple principle that continues to be eroded in order for someone to make a profit.

Ticket machines do not allow easy access to discount fares and certainly do not advise the Customer of all fares available. Ticket offices provide support to customers who are not able to understand complexities of the tariffs offered or what is actually offered. Public transport should be for people and not for profit

This useless Government attacking public services again without any democratic mandate to do so, ticket offices in stations must be protected and all British Trains must have a Guard onboard by law,if only We had a publicly owned transport system like Germany's Deutsche Bahn or the French SNCF it would be the Envy of the world again the Social Democratic party backs renationalised Public services. The awful Conservative and Labour parties do not

What happens when the electronic system breaks down or gets hacked into? Will anyone know what to do, or how to open the train windows? The virtual system should be a servant not a master so don't fix ticket offices when they aren't broken, they are gems of human contact to be used and valued.
