Public ownership is on the agenda - 4 ways we can max up the debate!

1 June 2017

Thanks to the Labour Party’s new manifesto, public ownership is back on the agenda after 30 years! So how do we build on this brilliant news?

1. A step by step plan for bringing services into public ownership!

Our manifesto is our vision of the future, where public services can be run by and for the people who use them, not private investors and shareholders. Don’t you think it’s time to take back what we’ve lost, protect what we have and create new public ownership? Our manifesto explains how we should bring rail, energy and water back into public ownership, protect the NHS from privatisation, and imagine new ways of running and using other public services and platforms, including social media.

Here’s our plan for how we do that.

2) Will your next MP support the plan? Lobby your election candidates.

We need to show politicians that public ownership is popular and practical! So we’ve set up a tool to help you tell your election candidates about our manifesto.. No matter who you’re voting for, its vitally important that all candidates from all parties know that public ownership is important to the people in their constituency. Just fill in your postcode and email address, and our tool will do the rest! Feel free to add to or amend the email message of course - everyone responds better to more personalised emails.

Take 1 minute to write to your candidates.

3) Compare and contrast - which parties support public ownership?

Earlier this week we were very proud to launch our ‘People vs Politicians’ tool. We’ve trawled through the manifestos so you don’t have to, mapping out the public ownership policies of all the major parties for this election. This means you can check what each party has said about public ownership of all the most important services.

View and share the map here.

4) Videos to highlight the politicians taking a stand for people not profit

In the week leading up to election day, we will be sharing videos from some of the main political parties - starting with Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell and Jonathan Bartley, co-leader of the Green Party. These videos explain public ownership policies in more detail, and allow the parties to explain why they are in favour of public ownership, and how their policy will work in reality. Check some of them out here, and make sure to share your favourites on social media. The more positive publicity these get, the more seriously the other parties will take the idea of public ownership.

Follow us on social media and share the videos

If we want to make sure this country is run for people, not profit, now is the time to act. We can’t waste this opportunity to make our voices heard across the country, and we’ve only got a few days left until election day. We need your help to get our message across, as loud and clear as we can. Get involved, share our resources, contact your candidates, tell your friends. Let’s build a movement for people, not profit.
