What is We Own It?
After 30 years of handing over our public services to private companies, it’s clear that privatisation has failed. Public services - the NHS and schools, rail and Royal Mail - belong to you, me and everyone. We pay for them, we use them, we own them.
Public services are vital for our families, friends and communities. But privatisation isn't working - the evidence doesn't support it and neither does the public.
That’s why we want to see a world where public services are run for people, not profit – whether that's water or energy, care work or council services.
We Own It was launched in 2013 to be a positive, forward-looking voice for public ownership. We work in two ways:
We work to stop government plans for sell offs and outsourcing. We Own It has helped to stop the privatisation of Network Rail, the Land Registry and NHS Professionals.
We show that public ownership is both doable and desirable. There are lots of success stories to learn from and we know that public ownership is popular and would save us money.
We Own It shares its message in the media, appearing on Channel 4 News, Sky News, Radio 4 and in the Mirror, Guardian and Financial Times. Our website has 250,000+ visits a year and we are growing fast on facebook and twitter.
