We Own It, our campaign for public ownership of our public services, has been around for just over 10 years! Here's an overview of everything we've won for people not profit together over the past decade.

  • After pressuring all the local councils to pass motions supporting public control, Better Buses for South Yorkshire persuaded outgoing Mayor, Dan Jarvis, to take the first step towards bringing buses into public control.
  • Better Buses for South Yorkshire won a commitment from the incoming Mayor, Oliver Coppard, to bring buses into public control within two years.
  • The first regional win for our 'Rebuild our NHS' campaign, with the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire ICS pledging to ban private companies from their NHS board .
  • By August, as a result of local campaigners taking action, ICS chairs made the pledge in 11 regions across England.
  • We pushed the Labour Party to commit to a publicly owned renewable energy company - Great British Energy - with public ownership mentioned in Starmer's keynote speech.
  • Local campaigners kick Centene, US insurance giant, out of an Islington GP surgery.

2023

  • January - Following our Channel 4 Ain't Broke campaign the previous year, the Culture Minister formally abandoned plans to privatise Channel 4.
  • The Big Issue picks We Own It as one of its '100 Changemakers for 2023' for our work fighting Channel 4 privatisation.
  • May - TransPennine Express brought into public ownership after co-ordinated protests and 8000 WOI supporter letters sent to the Transport Secretary.
  • Also in May - after 1,000 We Own It supporters signed an open letter to the Scottish Government, they responded and committed to end privatisation in the Scottish NHS.
  • September - Greater Manchester’s buses finally came into public control, after years of private bus companies trying to stop your campaign win in the courts and the press. 
  • October - Following campaigning by WOI supporters, rail commuters, disability groups, and unions, the Government is pressured into a U-turn on proposals to close 974 railway ticket offices across England.
  • Also in October - Liverpool's Mayor announced a move to public control of buses after 2000 We Own It supporters took action to push through the plans.

2024

  • March - West Yorkshire officially decided to bring buses into public control, the third region to do so following your successful campaigns in Liverpool and Manchester. 
  • November - Parliament passes the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act 2024 after years of campaigning by We Own It and other campaigners, to take all rail operations into public ownership by the end of this parliament. 

 

 

In 2017 we saved ‘NHS Professionals’ from being sold off.

By Summer 2020, over 300,000 people signed our petition calling on Parliament to protect the NHS from trade deals, which led to the House of Lords passing the NHS Protection Amendment to the Trade Bill.

In 2018 we helped successfully pressure the Justice Secretary to bring probation into public ownership!

In 2021, our Better Buses for Greater Manchester campaign WON!

We launched in 2013.

We've now grown to over 120,000 supporters!

In 2023 we campaigned successfully alongside other pressure groups and transport unions against the proposed closure of railway ticket offices in England. The Government scrapped their plans in October!
