How else can I take action?
- Email your MP to say NO to the Thames Water Creditors
- Email your MP to take the pledge for permanent public ownership of Thames Water
This isn't just about Thames Water. This is about every water company - and every household - in England.
Thames Water is the first domino in the collapse of privatised water. If Thames Water comes into public ownership, we set a precedent for every other water company to follow.
Privatisation is destroying our rivers and seas. Under privatisation, shareholders make the most profit by diverting your money away from much-needed investment in infrastructure, and into their own pockets. By taking profit out of our water system under public ownership, we can use billpayers' money to fix infrastructure and stop sewage leaks.
Regulation of the water industry has failed. There is a revolving door between Ofwat (the water regulator) and the water companies. Fines are pocket change - factored into business costs - for companies which make huge profits by charging you eyewatering bills.
Public ownership of water is popular and the norm. 8 in 10 of us want publicly owned water. Water in 90% of the world is in public ownership.
Public ownership of water is affordable - privatisation is not. Special Administration - a form of temporary public ownership - can be used to slash water company debts. This mechanism was used to slash debts when Railtrack was brought into public ownership as Network Rail.
Under privatisation, about ⅓ of our bills goes straight to debt servicing and dividend payouts. Under public ownership, this money would be spent on fixing infrastructure and lowering bills.
Public ownership is democratic. Under public ownership, households, workers and environmental groups could have a say on the Boards of water companies.
