With the Railways Bill returning to Parliament for debate, MPs joined We Own It’s photo-op on Parliament Square on Wednesday, 3rd May. They are demanding that the government back key amendments to make sure the bill delivers on the government’s promise to "put passengers at the heart of the railway".

Over the past few months, We Own It has worked with MPs Chris Hinchliff, Richard Quigley, Richard Burgon, Ian Byrne, Neal Duncan-Jordan and others on amendments to:

  • Give the railway key public interest duties to be accessible, protect the environment and serve the economy
  • End privatisation of rolling stock
  • Create a department in Great British Railways (GBR) responsible for considering opportunities to reopen stations and lines in underserved communities
  • Ban people with private interests sitting on GBR boards
  • Give passengers a seat on decision-making boards of GBR

We Own It Win: The government confirmed on Tuesday, 2nd June, that they will accept an amendment - co-drafted by We Own It, the Association of British Commuters and Richard Burgon MP - that will close loopholes in the bill that could leave the door open to future privatisation of GBR.

The Railways Bill passed in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 10th June, and will now head to the House of Lords.
