Ofwat has already signed off on 36% bill increases in the 2025-2030 period. This means that the average water bill in England and Wales is now £639.
But 5 water companies (Southern Water, Thames Water, Severn Trent, Wessex Water and South East Water) want to increase bills EVEN MORE by 2030.
All of the other water companies are also asking to spend more money, with the costs heaped onto customers in the 2030-2035 billing period.
This is OUTRAGEOUS.
New research from Unison has revealed that the prices charged for water are now more than double - in real terms - what they were before privatisation.
We’re paying more and more for water. And what have we got in return?
More sewage. More water outages. More hosepipe bans.
That’s because while billpayers are pouring money into the system, shareholders are taking it straight back out.
In the 2025-2030 period, £22 billion of our money is set to go straight on servicing expensive debt and shareholder payouts.
That’s a HUGE amount of money - money which could and should be going directly into fixing our crumbling infrastructure.
We’ve put together a consultation response demanding that Ofwat reject these bill increases.
And if this means that water companies don’t have enough money to survive? So be it ! LET THEM GO BUST and bring water into public hands at little expense to the public purse.
