Rebuild our NHS: Get Private Profits Out!

From the 1st of July 2022 our NHS across England will be reorganised. England will be divided into 42 new NHS bodies called Integrated Care Systems (ICS). Each ICS will be controlled by a board of directors with a duty to provide healthcare for people in our area.

This reorganisation of the NHS provides our local NHS leaders with an opportunity to reset the direction of travel of our NHS. Instead of continuing full steam toward more privatisation they must put the needs of local people first.

After a pandemic that has brought our NHS to its knees and following 10 years of chronic underfunding by the government, we demand that our local NHS leaders rebuild our NHS and get private profiteers out NOW.

Stop the Channel 4 Sell Off

Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries is pushing forwards with plans to privatise Channel 4. She says that “government ownership is holding Channel 4 back”. But this is not true. Channel 4 is a great British success story – it costs the taxpayer nothing and is already profitable.

Here's why we need to keep Channel 4 in public hands:

  • Channel 4 provides vital support for the creative sector by creating a market where small TV and film producers can get a foot in the door, compete and thrive. Channel 4 makes money from advertising and reinvests this back into programming and films. Privatisation would undermine this unique business model and the industry it supports, and lead to more generic content. Channel 4 made a profit of £74 million last year - there is no problem for which the privatisation of Channel 4 is the solution.
  • Channel 4 supports the government’s agenda on levelling up. It has a relatively new duty to prioritise the nations and regions - and has recently opened up new offices in Leeds, Manchester, Bristol and Glasgow. Through its commissions, it’s investing in vital jobs, boosting local economies and nurturing talent across the UK.
  • Channel 4 is hugely popular. As reported in the Times, 82% of the public believe Channel 4 should not be privatised.

Better buses for our communities.

Privatised and deregulated buses are failing us. Passengers can't rely on a regular service to get them where they need to be, while fares are sky high.

We’re taking action to bring West, South, and North Yorkshire's buses back under public control, and pushing Westminster to lift the ban on local authorities setting up publicly owned bus companies.
