We Own It, RMT and TSSA are joining forces to oppose ticket office closures

Cut their profits not our ticket offices

16 August 2022

Rail workers are standing up for a railway that works for workers and passengers - not for the profits of private companies. The RMT and the TSSA are not just fighting to protect the pay and conditions of their members, the workers who make our railways tick every day. They are also fighting to make sure that our ticket offices stay open to help passengers have the smoothest journeys possible. And we are joining forces with them in that fight on Tuesday 23rd August.

It was revealed last month that the government has secret plans to close almost 1000 ticket offices across the country.

As RMT General Secretary, Mick Lynch, has said: “The floodgates have now opened for the annihilation of ticket offices. Ticket office staff make sure our railways are safe, secure and accessible. Wholesale ticket office closures would be disastrous and leave our railway deserted. Disabled and elderly passengers will be particularly affected.”

Mick Carney, TSSA President and ticket office clerk for train operator Southeastern, said: “The move to close ticket offices is beyond short-sighted and typical of a Tory government who understands the cost of everything but the value of nothing.

“The elderly, disabled, less tech-savvy and many tourists rely on well-trained ticket office staff to not only get the best deal, but in many cases, without them, it would not be possible for them to travel. For me, a ticket office clerk of 33 years, this dispute is about far more than a pay rise.”

We could save a billion pounds every year from taking our railway into public ownership, yet instead of taking our trains into public ownership and reinvesting profits into cutting ticket prices and keeping ticket offices open, the government is protecting private companies and cutting facilities passengers depend on instead.

We know that the public is not on board with the privatisation of our railway. Our brand new poll, conducted by Survation, with a huge sample size of 4300, shows that 67% of the public want our railway in public ownership compared to just 21% who want it to be left in private hands. Even Conservative voters support public ownership of our railway by a margin of 63% for to 25 against.

We are coming together with the RMT and TSSA on Tuesday, 23rd August to fight the government’s plan to close our ticket offices - and you can get involved.

Here’s how you can get involved on Tuesday 23rd August:

  • Attend an action near you - protests are taking place at train stations across England on Tuesday 23rd August 2022. Below is the list of places and times of confirmed actions. (*If your town is listed, the action is taking place outside your local train station.)
  • If none of the actions listed below is near you - download and print out this poster, go to your local train station by yourself or with family and friends, take a selfie/picture of yourself carrying the poster in front of your local train station, and share your picture on social media. If you do not have a social media account, send your picture to info@weownit.org.uk so that we can share it for you. Please tell us where you took action in your email if you send us your picture.
  • If you live in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland - you can take action in solidarity with rail workers in England. Write out a message of support for rail workers in England and for keeping ticket offices in England open on a plain sheet of paper, take a picture with your message wherever you can (whether at home or at your local train/bus station) and share your message on social media. If you do not have a social media account, send your picture to info@weownit.org.uk so that we can share it for you. Please tell us the name of your town and nation in your email if you send us your picture.

It's no surprise that the public will have to bear yet another cut to services that have been made under successive Tory administrations. The big lie of tax cuts is that we pay more than we save from "reduced" tax as key services in our infrastructure fail because of lack of funding from government and investment from private companies. The big lie of privatisation is that it isn't more efficient at anything except profiteering whilst the public pays for reduced and poorer services. The transport system, utilities and health and social care services should belong to us; they did once before they were sold out from underneath us.

Jacqueline Bright replied on Permalink

This proposal makes the railway network much less safe for those of us who might need help in finding our way around.

Lynn Lambert replied on Permalink

All these points are true. The government does not believe in any sort of meaningful service. Only in profits for shareholders and the board. The rest of us can just suffer. It's the same with water, utilities, post, housing, you name it.

I think the idea is absolute rubbish.I do not like machines for everything I wish to have a person to talk to.what is one can't read or visibilty is bad or like me panic if i have to pay at a machine for anything.what if you dont know where to go and there is noone to ask, especially at large stations like reading West, its so stupid.

John replied on Permalink

I got fined £20 for jumping from one train to another on a connection that if I'd missed would have meant an hour's wait; the ticket inspector said he couldn't issue a ticket because there was a machine available - up a flight of stairs and along a corridor!

I am delighted to see WeOwnIt supporting the RMT and will be supporting the action against ticket office closures

DR MARIAN F LIEBMANN replied on Permalink

There are many complex journeys that I just can't book on the internet - the software isn't sophisticated enough to cope. I have to go to a real station with real people who know what they are doing and can work out the alternatives. Without this, I won't be able to travel.

Jacqui Smith replied on Permalink

Removal of ticket offices is discriminatory and does not support an increasing elderly population, who may feel more vulnerable when travelling, those who do not have access to the internet and those that use cash. Machines do not have the ability required to react to emergency or crisis. This system will also discriminate against the partially sighted or blind and other disabled travelers. It is massively short sighted.

Laura replied on Permalink

The staff at York station are exceptional: they are knowledgeable, helpful, professionally competent and generous with their expertise. Passengers shouldn't have to be experts on the arcane details of ticketing and route planning: that's why we have professional workers. Travelling is often complicated and many people need the support and help that staff at stations provide. And their presence makes the setting more human. I have sometimes used ticket machines - since they cut station staff and waiting times got so extended - and sometimes they don't work. And then you're left without a ticket unless staff are present to remedy the issue.

John Hunt replied on Permalink

It is alarming that those running our railways seem to have no knowledge of railway history.

The mass closures of the 60s and 70s are rightly seen as perhaps the most ill-advised event of transport history, but the fate of stations left open was also dramatic. All small and many larger stations were "rationalised" - the "basic railway" was created. This often meant total de-staffing, lowering of standards of waiting facilities, and widespread demolition of useful infrastructure. This all turned the railway into a marginalised, neglected and unimportant part of its community. Absence of staff led to deteriorating standards of maintenance and information, exacerbated by unprecedented levels of vandalism, leaving such stations as pretty unpleasant places to go. Costs may have been reduced, but so too was revenue, as passengers either lacked confidenece and deserted, or got a free ride. Cuts to services often followed.

Now, after a long period in which average standards at stations have actually gradually improved, often thanks to community efforts, a short-sighted Government and industry is wanting to turn the clock back.

Stop them !

Josie Hargreaves replied on Permalink

I have sometimes turned up at my local railway station to take a trip and the ticket office personnel have found a less expensive price than the one quoted online. The staff members are invariably pleasant and helpful. I don't like using the machines at the station even if they are working properly. People with certain physical or learning disabilities need someone to advise them and some elderly or anxious find personal assistance a comfort. We need PEOPLE to assist PEOPLE. I feel that revenue will be lost by people misusing train travel if we lose ticket office staff and the invaluable train guards.

We have so little to be proud of in Britain today.

Gary Dowling replied on Permalink

Closing ticket offices is discriminatory as it offers no help to elderly, disabled or those without electronic means. Also visible staff are reassuring to vulnerable people and as we know not all disabilities are obvious. The railway is a service not a cash cow and nor should it be used to fund other European rail networks.

Andrew Pittaway replied on Permalink

Stop money going to the rich and share the wealth rail users create by employing more people and reduce the amount claiming dole cheaper fares moves lots off people expensive fares means only move the wealthy

Stephen Staniforth replied on Permalink

When I buy a train ticket I want the use of SKILLED human beings to help me purchase the correct ticket and I am not disabled or very old etc. How are the people who need it the most going to get around the country. I think the answer to that is they will not they will just have to stop at home. This country is becoming a VERY sad place to live if you can’t even buy a rail ticket from a real person who has real skills of helping you. I have read about the already organised protests can we please have at least one BIG one at the weekend.
