Love Bristol? Want publicly owned energy? Peter Haigh, Managing Director explains how Bristol Energy puts people before profit.
Energy is not optional. It’s not a ‘nice to have’ or a luxury. Yet two thirds of us continue to pay over the odds for our gas and electricity. And around 4 million people across the country struggle to heat their homes or cook a hot meal.

We’re in the most competitive period in the energy sector’s history - there are now more than 40 suppliers to choose from. But public trust in the energy sector is still low. In a recent study, only pharmaceuticals and financial services ranked lower than energy.
So we’ve got a big job to do, but at Bristol Energy we can start by keeping things simple…and running an energy company that works for the people, not just the profit:

I am currently with EDF, I have a key meter being a pensioner, I find I can keep better control of my out goings. I am interested to know, where do you get your energy from. Is it renewable energy, or from other power stations ? Chatting about this a few days ago with friends, one of the things we could not understand is, why is Bristol, not investing in renewable energy? I live in Lawrence Weston, I am surprised we have not got cheaper renewable energy in this area. The technology has been round long enough, we have wind, solar, and tidal in abundance in Bristol, why not make full use of it all? If I were to decide to come over to you for my energy, can I keep my key meter? Also will you be fitting smart meters?

Hello there Alan, thanks for your question. Customers on our standard tariffs get 24% renewable electricity. This is the average grid mix, which you can find out more about on our website under our fuel mix. We also offer a 100% renewable tariff for people who would like to support green electricity.
We procure our green electricity from a number of generators across the country, including some in Bristol and the South West. The price of renewable has come down over the years, and we’re pleased to say that our My Green Plus tariff is normally no more than £5 per month more than our cheapest fixed rate tariff.
If you switch to Bristol Energy, you can definitely keep your key meter. We would switch you to our pay as you go tariff. Currently, we have smart meters for Bristol customers only, which we will be fitting during the next few months for people who would like them.

Our My Green Plus tariff gives customers 100% renewable electricity. Customers on our standard tariffs currently get 24% renewable electricity. This is the average grid mix, which you can find out more about on our website under our fuel mix. One of our priorities as we grow is to make our energy greener across all our tariffs. So we’re working hard to develop partnerships with renewable energy generators across the country.
