Did your MP take action on Cost of Water Privatisation Day?

16 September 2024

On Tuesday 10th of September, 90 Parliamentarians joined We Own It and a host of water campaigners to discuss the sewage scandal facing our rivers and seas.

Many were suprised to hear that:

  1. all water companies are failing to meet the targets set by regulators and are breaking the law;
  2. the government has the power to remove water company licences and cut their debts through Special Administration;
  3. that shareholders are set to extract £12.5 billion over the course of this Parliament alone.

As they arrived, MPs noted that they'd had lots of constituents get in touch asking them to join the session. Over 10,000 people wrote to their MP across the country asking them to attend.

Thanks to campaigners from Windrush Against Sewage Pollution, Ilkley Clean River Group, Henley Mermaids, Save Windermere, and UNISON for briefing the MPs who attended.

Increasing our water bills to pay bonuses to shareholders is disgusting, especially as it’s clear this take priority over out water systems that have been failing for many years now. We need to take back control from these companies.
