Why more competition on our railway will make things worse
The government is in the final stages of its review into the railways. And private rail companies have been lobbying hard to change the way the railways are run.
They think the current franchise model of our railways is broken. We agree with them on that.
But their solution would make matters much worse. They want to see more competition introduced, where different rail companies would compete in running the same lines. They argue this would give more consumer choice and drive improvements in the railways.
This might sound nice, but the reality is very different. If these proposals get adopted, they would lead to:
-
Passengers having to navigate more and more complex ticket options. You wouldn't be able to get on the next train that turns up.
-
Rural areas will ending up with no service at all, while the main intercity lines get more and more congested, as private companies pick and choose which services to provide. They'll only want the flashy, most profitable routes.
-
Total chaos when it comes to timetabling. If you think the timetabling debacle of last summer was bad, wait until there are three times as many companies all trying to figure out their timetables and blaming each other for problems.
We can't let the private rail companies get their way.
Public ownership is the only way to fix our broken railway - bringing all routes together under one unified, arms length company, run by professionals who genuinely have passengers’ best interests at heart - because they aren’t looking to make a profit!
