MPs #takecontrol of buses

On Wednesday 26th October, to mark the 30 year anniversary of bus deregulation, MPs joined the We Own It campaign to #takecontrol of buses. Forty MPs, representing the Green, Labour and Liberal Democrat parties, as well as and Baroness Randerson, who has been key to getting support for the We Own It campaign in the Lords, came and had their photo taken with the We Own It 'battle bus'. 

The photoshoot came days after the Lords had voted against the controversial Clause 21 of the Bus Services Bill. This is the clause that would effectively ban councils from taking control of buses, by making it impossible for them to set up new publicly run bus companies. We Own It will be campaigning on to make sure that the Lords vote stays in as the Bus Bill makes it way through the House of Commons.

York has invested in electric bus.s on one route in York. They are great, no noise, no pullution, no complaints. It should ban the use of the 'infernal' combustion engine from its streets. the population would get healthier, air pollution would cease and it would save millions

The bus services in this area, Frome Somerset, have over time become increasingly fragmented.My son lives in Wells. Buses from Wells to Frome are almost nonexistent especially at weekends.On Sundays no buses at all. During the week there are about three buses a day. Non in the evenings. People living in villages also suffer from very poor services.

The proposal to ban local authorities from running bus companies flies in the face of reason. Public transport of all kinds reduces pollution, cuts down traffic congestion and provides affordable transport for all who either cannot afford to finance car ownership or who who have made the forward-thinking and public-pirated decision to choose other transport options than the car. The government's plan to 'gift' these public services into the hands of profit-makers is deeply suspicious, quite apart from flying in the face of logic. As we are seeing with the endless troubles with the Brighton/London train line, re-nationalisation has to be the answer for the railways as well.

What is the the purpose of public transport, if not to serve the public and by those who are answerable to the public.. If there is no reasoned augument for this local authority restriction, then the sole aim of clause 21, of the 'Bus Services Bill' is ideological and there only to satisfy a particular and one sided interest group and their lobbyists.

This is undemoctatic and not in the public interest.

It must not become a charter for neoliberalism.

I believe it is deplorable for the governement to see the opportunity of running bus companies as a profit making venture for their voters. The people who mostly use buses are not the people whohave capital to buy cars and need buses often in non profit making areas. Ibelieve public transport should be that not for profit run on cooperative and not for profit basis.

Local Authorities must be allowed to run bus companies for people.

Eight miles from town center, appalling service from stagecoach, no buses after 10 ands if there are two people it's cheaper by taxi. Replace profit based service with people based services

Using a Bus is a "distress" purchase - ie we have no choice. "Distress" purchases include food, energy, water. We should be VERY careful about who we allow to control the supply of these.

We own the Buses & Trains that run in this Country. It was our Money that formed the likes of Doncaster Transport and British Railway. We want it back, right now through Privatisation we have the worst run Bus Services and Train Service that is that expensive we cannot afford to use our Transport Service. Buses and Trains are cancelled at any time they feel fit. It's time they was all fetched Back into our hands. Not run so the Shareholders can make vast amounts of Money. Put an end to all Privatisation. It has been proved that by taking these back into our hands we get a better Service plus the Service does make money. But the Conservatives still privatise the Service to the highest bidder. End all Privatisation now. We the Tax Payers own these Services and should not have been but into the Private Sector. Let our own local Authorities run these Services again not companies like First Mainline and Virgin Railway and Trans Pennine and the rest. Bring Back Doncaster Transport and British Railway. Let's stop these Shareholders they are holding us for Ransom. Some of these People do not even pay tax to our Country. End this Fraud Know.

I wonder if in an era of increasing, perhaps unquestioning privatisation and the focus on maximising financial gain, whether we should be doing the reverse and seeking opportunities for community owned enterprises with the focus on community well being (backed by financial viability)

I don't quite understand why the conservative party does not want this to happen. I can't see what they have to gain by not allowing it. By the way, my MP, Dave Anderson, did attend.

Without regular and frequent bus services everyone with a car uses it. This means the roads are permanently congested, the air is polluted, and those below the age of driving, and the ageing who only drive locally and in daylight, are unable to participate fully in social activities.

This bill is big government telling local decision makers what they can and cannot and conflicts with devolution policies which are being

promoted.

It makes no sense to continue to stop councils providing a publicly funded bus service.The government is only interested in implementing their ideology whether it works or not.Public services should be run for the public not for profit.Let this be the start of bringing back public ownership of our public services.The government should be ashamed of themselves for the money they have wasted on following a very flawed ideology.

From my opinion every place deserves proper transport provision regardless, by me their are hourly services up a hill and its in a conurbation completely inadequate its hardly a small village road with a tiny population, equally even villages need decent service to meet their needs and opinions are agreed upon and asked to all that live on a certain road or area. We are often limited in when we can travel and how and are met with complete ignorance from the transport and bus companies, clearly they have no idea what its like for the elderly and disabled, struggling to swap services to go where they actually need to or carrying shopping up hills they might think differently
