We've been asking councils across England to show their support for our campaign to force the government to drop its proposal to ban councils from setting up new publicly run bus companies. Councils can see that it undercuts their powers (known as the 'powers of competence') and threatens local democracy. They can also see that it ties their hands when it comes to negotiating the best deals with private bus operators - if the 'threat' of public ownership isn't there then private providers will just take them to the cleaners.
For all these reasons the campaign has attracted support from councils run by the Liberal Democrats, the Conservatives and Labour. So far the councils that have passed the motion are:
Sunderland
Durham
Nottingham
North Somerset
South Hams
